MLANG, North Cotabato(The Mindanao Cross)—Mayor Joselito Pinol of this town led health personnel Thursday morning in ridding the town’s public market of cigarette ads including signages bearing the name of the stores.
The mayor’s move was meant to convince constituents, especially minors to stop smoking. It was also meant to discourage the sale of cigarettes in public places like the town public market, terminals and near the school premises.
Pinol was also alarmed by reports reaching to him that many teenagers and minors are now engaged in smoking.
The mayor also asks the village officials to also launch a massive campaign against smoking and conduct an education and information on bad effects of cigarette smoking to human health.
“Let us make Davao City as a model. With massive campaign against smoking, Davao was awarded a red orchid by the Department of Health,” Pinol said.
Pinol also warned constituents to avoid using cigarettes in public places lest they be penalized under the town’s local ordinance.
Pinol said first offenders will be fined of P200, while second and third offenses will be penalized to pay P500 and P1000 respectively.
Stores that sells cigarettes to minors will also be facing cancellation of their business permits. (WILLIAMOR A. MAGBANUA)
